Fire detections on this map come from NASA FIRMS (Fire Information for Resource Management System), which aggregates data from MODIS and VIIRS instruments aboard the Terra, Aqua, and NOAA-20 satellites. Each detection represents a 375m or 1km pixel where a satellite thermal band detected anomalous heat consistent with active fire. Detections are updated every 30 minutes.
Named fire data comes from the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC), which tracks officially named wildland fire incidents across federal, state, and local jurisdictions.
