State Wildfire History

Browse fire history, annual season totals, and largest fires by state. Data from NIFC and NASA FIRMS.

Wildfire risk varies dramatically across the United States. The western states — California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico — account for the majority of large acreage events and structure losses. Southeastern states (particularly Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and the Carolinas) experience frequent but typically smaller fires driven by pine plantation fuels and prescribed-burn culture. Alaska has the largest annual acreage of any state in most years, but in remote boreal forest with limited structure exposure.
