Named Wildfires
Historical records for officially named wildfire incidents across the United States, from the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) and agency reports.
A wildfire is given an official name when it grows large enough to require multi-agency coordination. Incident commanders assign the name based on nearby geography — a creek, road, ridge, or landmark — so firefighters arriving from different jurisdictions can all refer to the same incident. Once assigned, the name persists in federal records permanently. This page lists named fires tracked in the NIFC IRWIN system along with acreage, cause, and structure loss data.
